It felt weird, to be returning like this. To step across the borders that were meant to keep <i>out</i> those that didn’t belong. And there was some irony there, he could feel it, hidden in the way his eyes searched the horizon, in the way his ears rotated towards every hint of sound.

The weight of his head dipped between his shoulder blades, pulling at the already taut skin that stretched across them. At least his father had moved on (and this was the first time he felt relief in that), his scent already cleared from the damp grasses and slick rocks that surrounded him. He knew that of the two of them, he at least belonged <i>more</i>. And maybe if he kept his attitude in check, Safira would let him back with little fuss. Maybe they could go back to the way things were, though that hope was thin and very much misplaced.

A moment of true fear gripped him as a bark rang out and his gaze landed upon a white frame in the distance. He froze, heart seizing through a beat before pounding against his ribcage. He could only see Maes, the very last man he’d thought he’d encounter — there, in front of him, waiting.

But when his vision cleared and he realized it was just that fuckhead Nyles, the fear was replaced by irritation. Of <i>course</i> he’d still be here. But what was he doing, just sitting there in the middle of goddamn nowhere?

Yukon’s ears flattened, but he didn’t think to say anything. Didn’t return the bark, didn’t take another step towards the man he had very little pleasant memory of.

Part of him was surprised. That she’d call him, that she’d want it to be him this year when his genetics had clearly failed her. Could they produce more offspring like Christelle? Surely not, but he knew that pressure was there. Combined with all the pressure they’d been applying to one another. It created a tension amongst the two Monarchs that he hadn’t felt in years, and he disliked it. He didn’t like feeling like he was standing on stable ground.

“My queen,” his voice thrummed in response as he drew in closer, breathing in her scent and taking in the sight of her. She was lightening with age. No longer the rich almost-black chestnut she had been in her youth. The paleness around her face was different too. And yet He thought her as striking as the first day he’d noticed her beauty, some years ago when they were both much younger. He imagined he was different, too. Finally he had overcome his scruffiness that had been forced upon him by the neglect faced in his youth.

He wanted to talk about things first, but he wanted also to just close the distance and demand from her the way he was accustomed to. Instead, he stopped along her side and nosed along her jaw to her chin questioningly.

She'd wandered up into this accursed valley, but for what? Valentina had seen the break in the hills, the gentle, grass-lined slope, and she could've sworn she'd struck gold, but so far, she hadn't been so fortunate.

What she'd found so far wasn't much, honestly. A few herds of deer and a great body of water. Maybe it meant she wouldn't go hungry this winter. With the cold weather moving in, she wouldn't dare risk trekking back back the mountains until at least springtime, so she supposed she was stuck.

Ah, well, she'd make the best of it. Valentina squatted by the stream to lap up a few drinks of water and, for no real purpose aside from entertainment, she waded into the shallows and pissed.
