Nico hated many things. He hated the way his fur felt when wet. He hated waking up early and hunting for his food. He hated when the day turned to night and the darkness swept across the earth, leaving nothing but the tiny glow of the moon to light his step. But most of all, he was beginning to hate walking the most.
His paws had carried him through valleys and mountain ranges, plains and forests, and still they did not stop. He carried on, pushing forward from days on end—and he was bored. Tired and exhausted, sure, but so fucking bored.
He didn’t quite know what he was looking for, but Nico was sure that when he ultimately found it, he’d know. But that logic only got him so far.
Far enough to ‘here’. Wherever here was.
Through the jagged peaks of the mountain range behind him, he followed the twisting curves of the river. Following its crested pathway as though it were breadcrumbs leading him to something great. But with each long and boring step came the assault of sharp rocks between his toes, and the god awful spray of water and snow above him.
In short, his fur was also getting wet. Another tick to the list of things he hated.
Nico grumbled through clenched teeth as he followed the river’s carved out path. All up until he had caught the sight of a large rock, and beneath its looming perch, the valley beneath.
He couldn’t help himself. The boredom was nearly tangible, like a rope around his throat. He leapt towards it, paws fumbling against a thin sheet of ice that lied atop. But when his limbs had settled and his balance was found, the boy shook out a howl.
One loud enough for the valley to hear.
Nico had arrived.

general content warning because it's champion lmao
Well this was fucking fantastic. The sleet was piercing her coat more than rain typically would. It seemed to pelt it's way straight between her guard hairs and irritate her. It wasn't enough to soak her to her skin, but it was plenty enough to have Champion wishing for cover. Lucky for her, the forests trees were just spiteful enough to keep dripping on her despite the canopy they formed overhead. Her blue eyes rolled sarcastically as if she'd shot a quip to her companions. Instead, she was pushing towards the alluring aroma of water. Something to refresh her. Plus, water often had shelter nearby if she was lucky.
It wouldn't take much to hide the small wolf. Delicately built, she was short and light. Her tan and white coat was not particularly flashy though it was appealing. She finally burst through some low-growing young pine saplings to see the tarn that stretched before her. It was red. Like the blood of her enemies red and she let out an audible gasp before blinking and inhaling deeply. It was most certainly not tainted with blood despite it's appearance.
Padding closer, her ears in 100% airplane mode, she squinted at the edge of the water where it gently shifted to lap the shore. Nothing suspicious yet. Her neck stretched out as she lowered her muzzle just enough to give a singular gulp of whatever liquid lay within. It was water. Fresh enough. Except it did taste slightly like blood. A metallic undertone that had her staring all the harder at it. This was fucked up. Was she in a pipe dream?

Maggie had seen two black bears this morning and the sun behind the heavy-hanging clouds he was sure wasn't even far past its crest. Dew clung to his spiky fur as he meandered, mismatched gaze keen as it searched ahead for anymore threats. Bears in spring were dangerous because of the cubs but bears this time of year weren't to be trifled with either, especially when it came to resources. It put Magnus in an annoying position, because he was hungry but hunting anything substantial was just asking for a brazen and hungry bear looking to pack on the pounds to chase him off.
Instead, he trotted with cheerful steps to the river he'd not noticed until recently. The rain made it hard to find the scent of water, but once he'd noticed it Magnus had made a beeline for it. Something to thirst his quench would be good enough for today, he thought with persistent optimism and crouched by the river's edge to lap at the babbling brook. His ears twitched, half listening to the gleeful gurgle of the cool water running over the smooth stones lining its banks, half listening for any encroaching presences.

The night was growing longer, it felt. Even with the time she'd burned behind her it felt as if many more hours lay in store. Moonlight was scattered from the trees around her, dappling the ground in a mis-matched pools of light. It somehow made the shadows deeper. Enough so to have her eye rolling about in an attempt to discern if there was truly danger waiting within. Her head swiveled with the movement as well, trying to ensure that nothing would come at her from her blind side. Atop her head, her fluffy white ears could be seen twitching and attuning to every sound. So far the journey had been peaceful. Yet the voluptuous woman had not stopped glancing back now and again as if there were phantoms at her heels.
Distantly could be heard the tin of the falls crashing into the basin below. She'd seen the basin from far, far up in the mountains when she'd crossed them. Good, then, that whatever she had left on the other side had not followed her here. Whatever monsters she left in her wake could remain there, forgotten like so many sorrows.
Time passed and soon enough she was pushing out of the trees and to a place where she could see the edges of the waterfall. She was approaching it from the top of the falls and she strolled out under the moonlight onto the moss-covered stones to stare at the myriad of flows that cascaded into the water below. Effervescent waves and rivulets danced on either side of her and she watched as sparkling water sprang up in a mist, some of it decorating her muzzle and her face.
At least the white noise of the water was cathartic. It bid her to finally settle, to relax her stiffened stance and close her eye and breathe in the petrichor of water and earth combined. So unbothered was she by the wet and the cold that she simply lay on the exposed surface of rock she had strode out on, letting the jewel-like froth alight on her topcoat. This time of year, it would never make it deep enough to chill her.
For a moment, an anxious woman found reprieve.
