A howl. Rudolph was in the area, but he wasn’t dumb enough to answer a call from a stranger. If anything, it made him uneasy. Were there packs around?
He hadn’t scented any borders, but with the prevalent snow, he was certain they could easily be missed. There was, however, something else he couldn’t resist investigating: the smell of a carcass. If another wolf was howling, it would be risky to investigate the scent of meat. In the wintertime though, the risk was certainly worth the potential reward. Even if a pack or a group of wolves laid claim to getting first bite, he could hang around until they finished and try to sneak a bite in after they cleared out.
Maybe. Or he’d get the shit beaten out of him. Time would tell; Rudolph was going to try.
He did not send a call of his own, but rather trotted closer to the scent and, when he was close enough to scent at least one wolf nearby, he slowed to creep the rest of the way.
Upon arriving, he could see only one wolf, guarding the carcass. Rudolph stopped to watch, to see if anyone else would arrive.
